*Part 4 of a multi-part look at some of my favorite albums from this year*

Over the Rhine, The Trumpet Child

The second husband and wife duo to make the Music Lovin’ list (the first was Waterdeep), this newest album by Ohio’s Over the Rhine continues the grand tradition begun by the band with their first albums in the early 90’s.  I first discovered Linford Detweiler’s piano skills and Karin Bergquist’s sultry voice in ‘02 and it was a revelation.  Where had this band been all of my life?

My first record purchase was Good Dog, Bad Dog and I was hooked.  The haunting piano and breathy, sensual vocals revealed songwriting and lyricism that not only stirred and moved but pointed to some Divine Other at the same time. This newest offering by the band finds a little more pep in the usual melancholy step but seems to amp up the sensuality factor with songs like, “Let’s Spend the Day in Bed” and “Desperate for Love”.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing these guys live about 3 times with this coming October making the fourth.  Do yourself a favor and head over to their website here where you can listen to the whole album for free on their OTR player, you won’t regret it.

Favorite lyric:
“We’d make Neil Young a senator,
Even though he’s from Canada,
EmmyLou would be an ambassador,
world leaders would listen to her”
-from If A Song Could Be President

Songs worth iTunesing:
I Don’t Wanna Waste Your Time
Trouble
The Trumpet Child
